Brook McIlroy

The end of an exceptional practice

I was sorry to hear that the firm Brook McIlroy recently closed after many years of practice. Over the past few years, I had the opportunity to photograph several of their public realm projects, and what has stayed with me was their control of scale and detail. There was a clear humanist sensibility in their approach. Spaces were designed to be experienced, not just seen.

Their work in the public realm was especially thoughtful. Connections were never incidental, and details were doing real work. That level of care is what set their projects apart. Their designs supported a sense of vibrant life.

I hope these photographs captured some of that design ethos.
